After a three-year wait, singer-songwriter and pop recording artist Chris Peters have unveiled his conceptual and highly relatable 13-track debut album, “To Be Known.”
A Berklee College of Music graduate, Peters embarked on a transformative journey working on a cruise ship, visiting various countries, and crafting his debut album influenced by the light pop styles of artists from Paul Simon to Harry Styles. The result is a collection that introduces Chris Peters as the new ‘boy next door’ in the music scene.
The album kicks off with the indie-pop gem “Drunk On A Memory,” a catchy and relatable track about navigating the aftermath of a past relationship. The diverse, ear-pleasing album unfolds with tracks like “Getting To Know Ya,” infusing groovy and toe-tapping mixes of alternative and funk. The soulful horn line combined with Peters’ velvety vocals creates a treat for the ears, inviting listeners into a passionate atmosphere.
“Europe,” the third track, introduces Tyler Simmons’ melodic vocals and lush alternative pop instrumentals. With European cliches sprinkled throughout, the song encapsulates the hope that a lover won’t forget amidst new adventures overseas.
Peters takes a nostalgic turn with “Unwritten,” the fourth track, delivering a soulful and groovy rendition of Natasha Bedingfield’s classic hit. The substitution of guitar for soulful keys and a groovy beat adds an irresistible touch to the track.
The emotional depth deepens with “What If We Waited,” a reflection on the end of a relationship and the haunting “what ifs.” The heartstrings are tugged with relatable lyrics and beautiful horns, making it a standout on the album.
“Blue’s Clues,” the sixth track, is a reality-check anthem about navigating adulthood and its lack of warning signs. The soul-soothing and downtempo alternative-pop atmosphere create a perfect backdrop for Peters’ introspective lyrics.
“Who Knew,” the seventh track, offers a gentle interlude, with tender guitar picking and layered vocals capturing intimate moments aboard a cruise ship. The album’s second half continues to impress, with each track showcasing Peters’ songwriting prowess and ability to touch on various subjects.
As the album progresses, highlights include the tropical getaway of “Ode To James” and the groove-packed “Loving and Living,” addressing the struggles of cohabitation with humor and honesty.
The title track, “To Be Known,” carries deep meaning for Peters, inspired by moments of feeling ‘loved.’ The upbeat and passionate track, influenced by Paul Simon, encapsulates Peters’ hope that every listener can feel loved and understood.
“Storybook,” the thirteenth and final track, concludes the album with a soothing lullaby melody, a gentle piano, and Peters’ soft vocals. It’s a poignant ending to an eclectic and relatable album, emphasizing Peters’ powerful and honest lyrics.
“To Be Known” is not just a debut album; it’s a melodic journey of relatability. Chris Peters’ ability to blend diverse influences and deliver authentic storytelling makes this album a standout in the pop landscape.
