Leonardo Barilaro, Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering at MCAST in Malta, not only explores the mysteries beyond Earth’s atmosphere but also shares his cosmic fascination through his accomplished piano compositions. His ultimate dream is to be the first person to play a piano concert on Mars, and while he works towards that lofty goal, his music has already made its way to space, played by astronauts and beamed back to Earth.

After an astonishing 2022, during which Leonardo released a new piece of piano music every day, he continues his prolific output this year with a string of new compositions. Amidst his leadership of the ASTROBEAT space mission on the International Space Station and the writing of his book, ‘Music from Space,’ Leonardo unveils his latest release, the instrumental piano work titled “Chrysalis.”

“Chrysalis” is a musical journey centered around the theme of resilience, portraying the concept of a chrysalis as a vessel for transformation. With only his musical mind and his Zanta ZB 200 grand piano, endorsed by the Zanta Pianoforti brand, Leonardo Barilaro crafts a stunning and moving musical experience.

The composition opens with bright plinks, creating an inviting and playful rhythm that varies in tempo and intensity through Leonardo’s deft performance. Trading melodies between bass and leads, “Chrysalis” evolves with bold strikes of chords injecting brooding energy before delicate top lines flutter, mimicking the process of metamorphosis that informs the composition.

“Chrysalis” is another breathtaking musical moment from Leonardo Barilaro, showcasing his prowess as a visionary composer of modern piano music. His ability to convey complex themes through emotive piano compositions continues to captivate audiences and solidify his position at the forefront of contemporary musical exploration.
