Neil C. Young, the captivating UK jazz guitarist hailing from Manchester, unveils a dazzling EP titled “ReWorks Vol. 1,” showcasing the technical and musical prowess of the Neil C. Young Trio. This instrumental gem takes listeners on a light-hearted joyride, exploring the realms of instrumental guitar, fusion jazz, and funk fusion.

Backed by Alan Whitham on bass and Ben Gonzalez on the drums, Neil C. Young’s expertly crafted arrangements breathe new life into existing hooks and patterns. The EP opens with “Issues,” a clean fusion jazz number featuring percussive riffs and tasteful jazzy clean lead guitar playing. It’s a no-nonsense fusion jazz piece where clean guitars take center stage, delivering virtuosic shredding with plenty of musicality—a raw and enjoyable jazz-rock fusion.

Following suit is “Video Games,” offering great harmonic arrangements and a joyous, happy vibe reminiscent of playing a favorite video game or watching preferred anime. The trio’s synergy is palpable, contributing to the infectious energy of the track. “Tijuana Lady” takes a softer, mid-tempo approach, enveloping listeners in a pensive harmonic embrace. The drums build tension in the outro, creating a musical narrative that keeps the audience engaged until the resolution.

Closing the EP on a high note is “Sunday Morning,” beginning with a calm clean guitar riff. This fusion track showcases instrumental technicality, especially with the drums, delivering a great fusion of musicality and technical flair.

Neil C. Young draws inspiration from jazz legends like Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, and Wayne Krantz. The trio’s extensive experience, including performances at festivals like the Zijhatanejo Guitar Festival and the Arts Festival in Holguin, Cuba, is reflected in their seamless chemistry.

“ReWorks Vol. 1” is part of a larger project where Young reimagines and remasters original recordings, breathing new life into compositions. This EP, part of a five-part project, showcases Young’s open mind and genuine sense of adventure. Vol. 3 was the first to be released as a solo YouTube project, while Vol. 4 was recorded and released by the trio. Vol. 1, originally recorded for a pre-COVID Spotify playlist, is now released under this iteration of the project.

The Neil C. Young Trio’s ability to convey emotion through the guitar with technical flair is evident throughout the EP. Their chemistry creates a sonic landscape that is both familiar and refreshingly unique. “ReWorks Vol. 1” is a testament to their artistry and a must-listen for those who appreciate light-hearted yet enjoyable jazz.
